Howell Hill, Lincoln County. David Howell and Reese Howell arrived
in this vicinity in the early part of the 1800s, coming from the Bowling
Green, Kentucky, area. They had received government land grants to
property here, but Reese eventually moved on, to Howell's Cove, in
Alabama, while David remained here, residing at the bottom of the
hill. Many Howells eventually populated this area. Marion Howell was
a grandson of David, while Charles Reese Howell Sr. was a great-grandson.
A son of David had the given name Charlie (probably Charles). On the
rolls of the county's 1850 census were Moses, Charles S., James, Elizabeth,
Jefferson and William Howell. C. R. Howell Jr. still resided in the
hamlet in the late 1980s.
