Chronological Timeline:
The first document to list James A. J. Costilow by name was the 1850 federal census. He coincidentally enough was enumerated twice within this census; the first time with his mother and step-father's family, and the second time with his sister's family. He was clearly bouncing between households and helping on the farms they were presumably renting, considering the census doesn't show them owning any real estate.

Research Notes:
It took a considerable amount of time to determine the origins of Martha Ann Miller, 1st wife of James Andrew J. Costilow. There's only ONE document that states Martha's exact place of birth.
Martha's daughter, Mary Catherine (Costilow) Richards, passed away on 29 Nov 1912 in Richland, Holmes County, Mississippi. Her death certificate states her parents were James A. Costilow, born in Adams County, Mississippi, and Martha Ann Miller, born in Perry County, Alabama. This death certificate is what helped open the doors to not only the Miller and Dawson research, but also the extended Costilow line as well.

NOTE: "Aunt Molly Richards" is the same Mary Catherine (Costilow) Richards mentioned above, regarding the death certificate in "Research Notes." My great-grandmother, Ellen Inez (Martin) Rodgers, was the niece of Aunt Molly; they share a striking resemblance to one another.
