NOTE: It's rather evident from the 1813 and 1814 tax lists that Thomas Howell is likely the son of John Howell. The 1808 and 1809 tax lists show there may have been another John Howell in the vicinity, likely younger and probably a son of either James or John Howell. This younger John Howell likely moved away elsewhere and we can presume Thomas Howell did also.
Warren County, Kentucky
The tax lists for Warren County, Kentucky show Joseph Howel residing within the county from 1799-1806. He does not appear in the 1797 or 1801 tax lists, though they need to be reviewed again. A James Howel also appears in 1805.

NOTE: The 1807 and 1808 tax lists reflect that David Howell and Joseph Howell at some point transferred their combined 400 acres of land on Little Beaver Dam Creek to Jacob Skiles, likely sometime after the 15 Jul 1803 tax list.
Thomas Lacy and his father, William Hugo Lacy, appear in the tax lists from 1803-1806; Thomas Lacy was married to Jane Howell in 1802, daughter of Joseph Howell. These families all removed from Warren County, Kentucky around the same time period (prior to the 1807 tax lists).
Granville County, North Carolina
It's evident from tax lists that most of these family groups had migrated into South Carolina from Granville County, North Carolina. There were also many Allen's, Dodson's, and Loyd's. A John Gwinn also appeared in 1780 and 1782. This is a detailed list of these family groups throughout the tax lists of Granville County, North Carolina:

NOTE: Samuel Howell first appears in 1825 and has removed after 1834, presumably to Fayette County, Tennessee.. His brother Joel Howell appears in 1826 and 1827.
Their nephew, Joseph H. Lacy, who was married to Jane Howard on 26 Jun 1833 in Hardeman County, Tennessee, appears in 1832 and 1833; census records show their first children were born in Alabama, so we can only presume they almost immediately removed to Alabama after they were married.

NOTE: The Joseph Howell (b. ~1760/1770) in these tax lists from Williamson County, Tennessee, would later end up in Wayne County, Tennessee during the 1820 and 1840 federal censuses. He is presumably the father of Nancy Howell (married to Joshua Briley), Henry Howell, Temperance Howell (married to Milton Gambell/Gambill), Benjamin Howell and John Howell. The majority, if not all, of these children ended up in Wayne County, Tennessee by the 1830 and 1840 federal censuses.
Nancy Howell and Joshua Briley's first child was named Bathsheba Briley, who married Benagy Steele. Descendants of Nancy Howell are autosomal DNA matches to the descendants of Hiram Howell. Interestingly enough, Hiram Howell eldest daughter was also named Bathsheba. Could this point towards a naming pattern?
