On 12 Sep 1785 in North Carolina, "the heirs of James Howell a private" was issued land warrant #2187 for 640 acres for military service and a survey was ordered. On 10 Jul 1785, before the warrant was even issued, James Howel assigned rights to the warrant over to John Price, "for full value received and request Martin Armstrong or his deputy to make the survey in the name of said John Price;" James Sheppard was a witness. John Price assigned his rights over to Thomas Person on 22 Sep 1785, with William Little as a witness.
A portion of the warrant was assigned to John Overton by the "heirs of James Howell" for 230 acres, date unknown, and John Overton entered his claim on 5 Jan 1808. The survey was completed on 11 Apr 1809 and the land was described as being part of the warrant and lying in Davidson County, Tennessee, within the 1st District on the head waters of Browns and Otters Creeks; "beginning at a large sugar tree Jesse Maxwells NW corner and Samuel Bartons SE corner and SW corner of the heirs of David Maxwells preemption, runs South with Jesse Maxwells West boundary 125 poles to a sugar tree his SW corner, thence East with his line 23 poles to a large black ash Thomas Hardimans NW corner, then South with his line 270 poles to a sugart ree and mulberry John Buchanans NE corner, then East with his line 96 3/10 poles to two lynns SE corner to said John Overtons preemption, then North with his line 395 poles to a sugart ree and hackberry his corner in the South boundary line of Bartons now Overtons preemption, then East 73 3/10 poles to the beginning."
NOTE: The records as a whole make it apparent that James Howell, a private who served in North Carolina, died sometime between 10 Jul 1785 and 12 Sep 1785. James Howell himself assigned rights over to John Price on 10 July 1785, otherwise every other mention states "heirs of James Howell."
