On 10 Dec 1840, Jeremiah Howell of Carroll County, Mississippi received land grant #6148 for 40 acres. The land was described as being the N1/2 of the E1/2 of the SE1/4 of Section 27 Township 20 Range 5 East. Nathan/Nathaniel Miers and Jackson Miers are known neighbors.

On 4 Jan 1843 in Carroll County, Mississippi, administrator William E. Withers sold a negro slave girl to Levina Howell for $735. The girl was described as "a certain negro girl named Eliza aged about 14 years a bond slave for life." The witness to the deed was Will Sanders. William E. Withers proved the deed on 15 Jul 1845.
