NOTE: When did Samuel Howell obtain these 150 or 160 acres of land? The only other Howells to appear in the same time period were brothers Gwin and William Howell, sons of John Howell and Sarah Gwinn.
On 9 Mar 1816, Samuel Howell as assignee of John Gowen, received land grant #8863 for 50 acres of land. The land had been surveyed on 14 Jul 1809 and was described as being in Bedford County on the South side of Elk River and on the waters of Stewarts Creek; "beginning at a sugar tree in the East boundary line of a 400 acre tract in the name of Robert Kennedy, running thence East 126 poles to a large white oak dogwood and hickory on the West side of a hill, thence North 63 1/2 poles to two small hickories on the West side of a hill, thence West 126 poles to three dogwoods in said Kennedys line, thence South with the same 63 1/2 poles to the beginning."
The 1820 federal census has Samuel Howel enumerated in Lincoln County, Tennessee. His household consisted of the following:

On 31 Jul 1824 in Lincoln County, Tennessee, Samuel Howell sold 60 acres of land to James Lingo for $300. The deed describes the two tracts of land as being in Lincoln County on the head waters of Stewarts Creek. The witnesses to the deed were George W. Dennis and Elijah Mayfield.
beginning at a poplar marked E.S. in the East boundary of a 640 acre tract in the name of Robert Buchanan, running from thence South with his line 50 poles to a poplar, thence East 96 poles to a dogwood and hickory, thence North 50 poles to a post oak and dogwood, thence West 96 poles to the beginning containing 30 acres being part of a tract granted to Reese Howell by grant #15846 dated 2 Oct 1812
also one other tract adjoining the above described land beginning at a lynn and dogwood supposed to be the South East corner of a 640 acre tract in the name of Robert Buchanan running from thence East 25 poles to a white oak and poplar, thence North to and with the line of a 30 acre tract in the name of Brice M. Gorner 65 poles to a poplar his corner, thence East with his other line 23 poles to a stake, thence North 69 poles to a stake 8 poles East of a dogwood marked as a corner in the South boundary line of a 2500 acre tract in the name of George Dohert, thence with the line South 84 1/2 West 48 poles to a white oak and beech in said Buchanans line, thence South with the same 129 poles to the beginning containing 30 acres granted to James Bright by grant #14507 dated 19 April 1820

Tax lists from Hardeman County, Tennessee, show Samuel Howell residing within the county from 1825 to 1834. His brother, Joel Howell, also appeared in 1826 and 1827, proving we have the correct family. Their nephew Joseph H. Lacy appears in 1832 and 1833.

On 27 Jan 1840 in Fayette County, Tennessee, William Rosser sold chattel to Charles, Hiram, Caroline, Eliza, Samuel and Nancy Howell, heirs of Samuel Howell deceased. The consideration for the deed was "for the respect and love I said William Rosser had for Samuel Howell dec'd and his surviving family." The witness to the deed was G.G. Durham. The chattel that was sold consisted of the following items:

1 bureau
1 table
1 pot
1 dum heifer and milk cow
1 yoke of yearlings
2 small heifers 5 years old
