The publication Tennessee, The Volunteer State, published by John Trotwood More and Austin P. Foster, states the following concerning Rutherford County, Tennessee on page 870:
"Early settlers were: Sam Wilson, who located at Wilson's Shoal on Stone's River; Wm. Adkinson, Thos. Nelson and Thos. Howell, near Stewart Creek; Robert Overall, on Overall Creek; Nimrod Menifee, near the Federal cemetery; Col. Robt. Weakley, Robt. Bedford, Col. Richard Ransom, Rev. Jas. Bowman, Charles Ready, Thos. Ruck, Richard Saunders, and Capt. Wm. Lytle, the last named being the owner of the land on the site of Murfreesboro."
Rutherford County, Tennessee was formed in 1803 from parts of Davidson, Williamson and Wilson Counties.

A deed dated 7 Oct 1817 in Lincoln County, Tennessee, between William B. Higgins and Francis Smith describes a tract of land that was formerly resided upon by Thomas Howell but now Francis Smith. The land is described as lot #94 in the Town of Fayetteville in Lincoln County.

On 18 Apr 1818 in Lincoln County, Tennessee, it was reported by John Silvertooth and John Dowdy administrators of the estate of David Shelton deceased, that Thomas Howell had settled an account of 1 pound 6 1/4 pence.

On 24 Oct 1828 in Lincoln County, Tennessee, Thomas Howell entered into a mortgage due to a debt owed to Brice M. Garner for $180. The deed states the first payment was to be made within 12 months, with the final payment within 36 months. Thomas Howell put the following property up as collateral: four head of cattle, two bed steads & furniture, two ___, one table, one loom & gears, two pots, two ovens & lids, one skillet, two washing tubs, two __ & peggins, one churn, nine chairs, five crocks, one dozen knives and forks, one & a half __ plates, three pitchers, 1/2 dozen cups and saucers, one sugar dish, one spinning wheel, ___ of carpenters tools, one grind stone, two axes, one broad axe, two hoes, one plough, two smoothing irons and one pair fire irons. The witnesses to the deed were Enoch Rust and T. S. Williams.

On 24 Aug 1832, Thomas Howell received a warrant for 27 1/2 acres of land in Rutherford County, Tennessee. The land was surveyed on 10 Oct 1832 and was described as being on the waters of Stewarts Creek, beginning on a white ash Bateys corner, thence North 147 poles to a stake Purkitts corner, then West with his line 40 poles to two cedars, then South 8 East with an old line 147 1/2 poles to a stake in Payns line, then East with his line to the beginning. Grant #14493 was ultimately issued on 26 Jun 1837.
