The Early Gombás Family
in Szentmihály
Taxation Records, 17th-19th Centuries
Early tax lists for Szentmihály are generally vague when it comes to information about those paying taxes. The citizens of Szentmihály were except from taxes for a large majority of time, hence why there are few surviving tax-payer lists. The surviving ones that mention a Gombás (or variation) are explained immediately below.
A tax list from 1611 for Szentmihály shows a "Joannes Gombos" having deserted his plots [deserta sessiones].
NOTE: This was prior to Zsigmond Lónyay allowing hajdúk to settle in Szentmihály in 1625. This may reflect that our Gombás ancestors are original inhabitants of the village.

The 1715 national census of Hungary shows "C[olonus] Joannes Gombos" possessing 20 plots within 1 tract of land, which appears to be the norm within Szentmihály. A colonus was a tenant farmer; essentially a sharecropper, paying landowners with a portion of their crops in exchange for use of their farmlands

Brick-Walls & Loose Ends
The Gombás family was rather large and these are all the loose-ends and brick-wall branches of the family from Szentmihály. Some of these families reach into neighboring Hajdúnánás, Tiszadada, Tiszadob, Tiszaladány and Tiszalök.
