On 14 Mar 1866, József Gombás was drafted into the 39th Company, 14th Huszár Regiment. The Austro-Prussian War erupted as a result of the dispute between Austria and Prussia over the administration of Schleswig-Holstein, which formally began in June 1866. Our ancestor József Gombás was likely present at the Battle of Königgrätz (present-day Sadová, Czech Republic), which took place on 3 Jul 1866. At that time, it was the largest documented battle of not only that war, but of the entire world. Austria suffered a terrible defeat, with our ancestor József Gombás surviving, and later being stationed in a more peace-keeping area along the border. He was discharged from service on 14 Mar 1866 in Marburg, which is present-day Maribor, Slovenia.

József Gombás personnel sheet, 1866-1869
On 15 Dec 1869 in Szentmihály, József Gombás was married to Zsuzsánna Gulyás. The marriage record describes József Gombás as a zsellér (a serf who farmed others' land) residing in Szentmihály house #1041, he was of the Reformed faith, 25 years old and single. Zsuzsánna Gulyás was the daughter of István Gulyás, a zsellér residing in house #159; she was of the Reformed, 19 years old and single. The witnesses to the marriage were Ferencz Gombás and Miklós Pethe. They were married by the Reformed parish pastor Miklós Tóth.
The very last column provides information about József Gombás' above-mentioned military service. The information on this marriage record is what ultimately lead me to the personnel sheet.

József Gombás died a rather peculiar death on 10 Nov 1886 in Szentmihály, while residing in house #1041. His death record states the cause of death was "meglövés" which translates to 'shooting.' I can find no further information about his death.
Zsuzsánna Gulyás remained a widow raising her grandson József Gombás, son of Sándor Gombás and Eszter Tóth. She later passed away on 11 May 1921 in Büdszentmihály house #1283. The death record states she died from terminal weakness [végelgyengülés].
