Chronological Timeline:
On 16 Feb 1798 in Logan County, Kentucky, Hannah Castlow [written as Collow in margin] was bound out to Nathan Johnston Sen. of Logan County. Hannah was to be "taught sewing, spinning and all necessary business common to woman and that the said Hannah to serve said Nathan Johnston four [or five?] years from the date hereof on until she arrives to the full age of sixteen years, during which term of years she the said Hannah his mistress shall faithfully serve and his suits keep and all his lawful commands carefully obey first to her master, she shall not do no willfully suffer to be done by others the goods of his master, she shall not embezzle or waste not them lend without his consent to any for action, she shall not commit matrimony, she shall not contract from the service of said master she shall not any time depart or absent herself without her said masters care but in all things a good and faithful servant shall and will demean and behave herself to ward her said master and all her during the aforesaid time and her said master shall and will teach the said Hannah to spin, sew &c and shall find and allow her meal drink washing lodging apparel bed lining and wolen and all the necessary fit and convenent for such a servant during the time aforesaid and shall at the end of said time give her the said Hannah a new suit of apparel and a spinning wheel and shall also cause her to be taught to write and read." This indenture was witnessed by Samuel Caldwell, clerk of the Logan County court.
NOTE: Nothing is clearly stated about Hannah's age, although it's clear she was under 16 years old. Transcribed sources show her name as "Hannah Cartlove." The court minutes show her name as "Hannah Cosllow."
