The 1840 federal census has Caroline and Jack Custaloe enumerated next to one another in King William County, Virginia. Their households consisted of the following "free colored persons":
Caroline Custaloe
1 Male under 10 -
1 Male 10-24 -
3 Females under 10 -
-
-
1 Female 10-24 -
1 Female 24-36 -
1 Female 55-100 - Caroline
Jack Custaloe
2 Males under 10 -
-
1 Male 24-36 - Jack
3 Females under 10 -
-
-
1 Female 10-24 -
1 Female 24-36 -
NOTE: The 1833 list of "free negroes and mulattoes" states Caroline was 47 years old = ~1786. The 1840 census places her birth sometime before 1785 and there is no one in her household aged 36-55, so it must be her. I don't think a 55+ year old woman would've passed for someone under 36. This also likely means that their mother Agnes had since passed away, as she's not present in either of their households anymore.
