On 9 May 1895 at the Russell Street Police Station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, a police report was filed regarding the suicide of Paul Francis Costelloe aged about 60 years. The death occurred the previous day, on 8 May 1895, at the Spencer Street Railway Station "with a revolver when sitting on a seat on the platform of the Railway Station." After removing the body to the morgue, the found 3 pounds 18 shillings 3 pence and "some private papers." They furter stated that he had "been a house and land agent in Collins St. and that he has lately become insolvent and was to have appeared for examination on the 17th inst: in the Insolvency Court, it is supposed that his financial embarrassments caused him to shoot himself."
On the same day, his widow S. M. Costelloe, otherwise written as Isabella Mary Costelloe, stated her late husband Paul Francis Costelloe was 70 years old, a house and land agent, and he left behind the widow and three children. The widow further stated she "did not know he had a pistol usually he slept well. The night before last he slept badly. I am sure he shot himself from the effects in his mind of his misfortunes."
NOTE: The death certificate states his parents were "Lorenzo Wm. Costelloe" and Alicia Higgins.

On 10 May 1895, the newspaper The Age of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, published a funerary notice regarding Paul Francis Costelloe:
"COSTELLOE-The Friends of the late Mr. Paul Francis Costelloe are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the place of interment. Melbourne General Cemetery. The funeral will leave 165 ___ street, Albert Park, THIS DAY (Friday), 10th inst., at half-past 2 o'clock. JOHN DALEY, Undertaker, Latrobe and Spring streets, Melbourne, Telephone 827."
