On 25 Nov 1766 in Ireland, a memorial of articles of agreement were recorded between Moses Coates Gent. Tanner of Eyrecourt in County Galway and Stephen Costoly Gent. Farmer of Clonfert in County Galway, and Ann Costaly daughter of said Stephen of the third part. The articles of agreement recited a marriage proposal including a dower: if Ann were to become a childless widow, she would receive 400 pounds from Moses Coates' freehold & personal estates; if Ann were to become a widow with one child, she would receive 300 pounds and lay claim to a 1/3 of all estates. The deed was witnessed by John Sharp Farmer of Springfield Kings County, Lawrence Costilloe Farmer of Clonfert in County Galway, Josh. Costillo Farmer of Clonfert in County Galway, and Robt. Green of Greenhills. The agreement was proven on 1 Jul 1767 by Lawrence Costillo.

On 18 Dec 1766 in Ireland, a memorial of an indented deed of lease was recorded between Col. John Eyre of Eyrecourt and Stephen Costello farmer of Clonfert in County Galway. The lease was for "the farm of Caltragh arable & pasture" consisting of 156 acres of land, described as lying "above the Decoy & Decoymans Holding situtate lying & being in the Barony of Longford & County of Galway." The duration of the lease was for the natural lives of the said Stephen Costello, Laurence Costello, and Joseph Costello "his third & youngest son." The yearly rent due was 5 shillings "for every acre during the first life that shall happen to decease and the sum of 5 shillings & 6 pence per every such acre during the other two lives, together with 6 pence __ pound received sallary payable moietively on every 1st day of May and 1st day of November over & above all taxes." The witnesses to the deed were Chas. Jackson, Moses Coates of Eyrecourt in County Galway, and David Leech of Clonfert in County Galway. The deed was proven on 4 Aug 1768 by Moses Coates, described as being "aged 25 years & upward."

On 4 Oct 1775 in Clonfert, County Galway, Ireland, farmer Stephen Costello wrote his last will and testament. He bequeathed to his wife Margaret Watters, as well as his three children Lawrence (1st son), Christopher (2nd son), and Joseph (3rd son). The witnesses to the will were Martin Costello of "Coltragh" and William Costello of "Mentin?".

On 24 Nov 1790 in Ireland, Stephen Coates, John Coates, Eyre Coates, Mary Coates Marcella & Elizabeth Coates, Christr. Maria & Laurce. Coates plaintiffs entered a bill against Joseph Costello defendant. There was an answer to the case on 7 Mar 1791.
On the same day, Moses Coates administrator of his late wife Ann [Costello] Coates defendant entered a bill against Joseph Costello defendant. There was an answer to the case on 7 Jul 1791.

On 28 Nov 1791 in Ireland, a memorial of an indented deed of agreement was recorded between Joseph Costello only brother & administrator of Lauce. Costello late of Banagher in King's County and Hugh Flattery merchant of Cloghan in King's County. This agreement referenced a lease dated 13 Apr 1781 between Edmd. Malone Esq. of Ballinahown in County Westmeath and Lauce. Costello Gent. then of Clonfert in County Galway. The lease dated 13 Apr 1781 was for the "town & lands of Ballinahown commonly called Renown & part of Federnagh containing plantation measure 220 acres 1 rod & 30 perches." The duration of the lease was for the term of 31 years, or the lives of the said Laurence Costello, Stephen Coates son to Moses Coates of Eyrecourt, and James Darcy son to John Darcy of Clonmacnoice? or Seven Churches formerly herd to the late Stephen Costello Gent. of Clonfert. The lease began on 1 May 1780 with the yearly rent of 14 shillings per acre. It further states that considering Laurence Costello "was since dead" all rights, titles and judgements then legally came to and vested in the said Joseph Costello. He transferred the lease to Hugh Flattery after receiving payment of 100 pounds sterling. The transfer of the lease began on 1 May 1791 and was for the duration of the original 31 year lease (~20 years were left). The deed was witnessed by Stephen Coyle Gent. of Cellbridge in County Kildare and Laurence Bomford Molloy Gent. of the City of Dublin. The deed was proven on 1 Dec 1791 by Laurence Bomford Molloy.

Coates, Maria Coates, Laurence Coates & Eyre Coates minors by Moses Coates their father & next friend plaintiffs entered a bill against Joseph Costelloe defendant. There was an answer to the case on 7 Jul 1791. The defendant answered by his attorneys on 6 Jul 1793, later replied to by the plaintiff's attorney on 11 Jul 1794, and finally rejected by the defendant on 12 Jul 1794.

On 26 Jan 1797 in Ireland, a memorial of an indented lease was recorded between Edmd. Malone Esqr. of Cartrons in County Westmeath and Stephen Rafferty farmer of Ballinlassy in County Westmeath. The lease was for 73 acres, part of the lands of Cartrons also known as "Little Cartrons, Killamiglan & Maddens Garden." The three lives for the lease were the said Stephen Rafferty, his eldest son Michael Rafferty, and Joseph Costello's son Stephen Costello of Banagher. The witnesses to the deed were Christr. Malone farmer of Cartrons in County Westmeath and G. White attorney & gent.

On 21 Mar 1800 in Ireland, a memorial of an indenture of lease was recorded between Joseph Costello Gent. of Banagher in King's County and Patrick Corcoran & Michael Corcoran both Farmers of Ballihaise in County Galway. The property was described as being the "land of Caltragh in the County of Galway," situated in the Bo. of Longford and County of Galway, containing 37 acres 4 perches with the commonage west of the same. The duration of the lease was for 23 years 6 months, beginning on 1 Nov 1807, and it further states the Corcoran individuals were allowed to "reclaim any bogs that was not then surveyed." The yearly-rent was 19 shillings 6 pence per acre. The witnesses to the deed were Edwd. Flattery & Kernan Molloy both Merchants of Banagher in King's County, Martin Connick Merchant of Eyrecourt in County Galway, and Michl. Conway. The deed was proven on 16 Jun 1801 by Edwd. Flattery.

On 20 Jul 1819 in Ireland, a memorial of an indented deed of mortgage was recorded between Stephen Costello Gentleman of Mount Erin in King's County and William Kelly Gentleman of Loughrea in County Galway, citing an indenture of lease dated 21 Feb 1781 from Francis Enright Esquire of Banagher in King's County to Laurence Costello Farmer of Clonfert in County Galway. The property was described as being a "dwelling house wherein the said Francis Enright then lived with the Malt House and other offices thereunto belonging likewise the near Garden adjoining the yard for ever also the far garden at the yearly rent of 27 pounds 10 shillings sterling during the life of the said Nicholas Crawford and 41 years, near the town of Banagher aforesaid with the appurtenances at the yearly rent of 27 pounds 10 shillings sterling during the life of Nicholas Crawford & 41 years, Lawrence Costello paying only 24 pounds 13 shillings 4 pence half penny sterling yearly for the Dwelling House, Malt House, Office and near Garden for ever and after the expiration of 41 years after the death of the said Nicholas Crawford said Laurence Costello were to deliver up the quiet possession of the far garden and meadow thereto belonging with all improvements to be made thereon."
Another memorial of a lease dated 8 & 9 Aug 1805 was recorded for Thomas Miller Gentleman of Banagher, which was released onto Joseph Costello, and formerly held by George Whitfield, Elizabeth Chapman, Martin Burnett and Edward Flove? The duration of Joseph Costello's lease was from 1 May 1818 for the natural lives and life of Stephen Costello and Laurence Costello, two sons of the said Joseph Costello, and Mary Costello eldest daughter of the said Joseph Costello. They were to pay the yearly-rent of 16 pounds 8 shillings 3 pence paying half-yearly.
Another deed of lease and release dated 27 & 28 Sep 1805 from widow Dorothea Hussey otherwise Winter of Banagher, King's County to Joseph Costello Gentleman of Banagher. The deed described the property as "the two parks near the Town of Banagher late in possession of Dorothea Hussey containing 4 acres 3 rods Irish Plantation." The term of the lease was for the duration of the lives and life of Joseph Costello with the yearly-rent of 7 pounds an acre, payable half-yearly. "The said several and respective recited leases and the premises thereby demised became legally vested in the said Stephen Costello."
Another recited deed of lease and release dated 24 & 25 Nov 1816 from Giles Eyre and his eldest son John Eyre Esqrs. both of Eyrecourt in County Galway to Stephen Costello Gentleman of Banagher. The property was described as being "the town and lands of Caltra containing 156 acres situate in the County of Galway measured and bounded as in said lease is for the lives and life of Stephen Costello, Lawrence Costello and William Costello sons of the said Stephen Costello and the survivor of them at the yearly rent of 43 pounds payable half-yearly."
Another recited deed of lease and release dated 28 & 29 Dec 1817 from Denis Bowes Daly Esqr. of Daly's Town in County Galway to Stephen Costello Gentleman of Banagher County Galway. The property was described as being "all that and those the Rape Mill holding in his possession then being am ample as Daniel Habterry? and William Gibbons held the same containing 23 acres situate near Banagher King's County at the yearly rent of 95 pounds 13 shillings 2 pence payable half-yearly for three lives of 31 years."
Another recited deed of lease and release dated 13 Sep 1814 recorded that Stephen Costello took possession of the houses, lands and premises for the duration of his natural life and 500 pounds sterling; also 5 shillings sterling paid to Stephen Costello by William Kelly at or before the ensealing of the deed. The property was described as containing "houses mills lands yards and gardens."
The deed was witnessed by James Burke near Loughrea and James Phillips of Castlebar in County Mayo, and signed by farmer Stepn. Costello. The deed was proven by James Burke on 17 Jan 1821.
NOTE: This is a very large deed, and as you can clearly see, many leases are recorded spanning a total of 40 years. I believe the initial lease for Laurence in 1781 was then transferred to his younger brother Joseph, after Laurence died in 1790. Every other individual in these leases are either children or grandchildren of Joseph.
