Howell Y-DNA Research
Howell Surname Y-DNA Groups at FamilyTreeDNA (400+ men tested)
Two male descendants of Hiram Howell and Rachael Young have completed Big Y-700 testing at FamilyTreeDNA (kits 876709 and 1027648). They both descend through Hiram & Rachael's son, David Howell who was married to Parthena Smith, and through their sons Thaddeus Howell (kit 876709) and William Young Howell (kit 1027648). These two Y-DNA tests both belong to haplogroup R-FT2697 and they're nearly an exact match in two ways:
The Y-STR genetic distance of 3 indicates their shared paternal-line ancestor was from approximately 1600-1900. This aligns with documented research, as Hiram Howell was born about 1790.
These two men share all but two SNPs, which only kit 876709 seems to have: Z25497 and 15591352. This reflects a range of ~1725-1865, which again aligns with what we know about Hiram Howell.
Neither of these Howell men match any other Howells in the public database at FamilyTreeDNA, of which over 400 have joined.
The closest match is surnamed JONES, has taken a Y-DNA111 test and their earliest known ancestor was Benjamin Jones (1651-1718). The Y-STR genetic distance is 9, indicating the shared paternal-line ancestor was from approximately 950-1650. They unfortunately have not taken a Big Y-700 test.
The next closest match is surname LEWIS, has taken a Big Y-700 test and their earliest known ancestor was a man named George Lewis. The Y-STR genetic distance is 10, indicating the shared paternal-line ancestor was from approximately 800-1600.
As far as haplogroup R-FT2697 is concerned, our MRCA (Most Recent Common Ancestor) is estimated to have been born around 1000 CE. These are our nearest ancient matches from the sub-branches. They are all extremely distant and there's no conceivable way to connect to them through the genealogical record - records simply didn't exist back then. Nevertheless, these are our most-closely related paternal-line cousins; they hail from both England and Wales.

NO MATCH
Considerable amounts of research and family trees online state that David, Reece and Hiram Howell were the sons of Samuel Howell and Mary Hutson. However, Y-DNA testing at FamilyTreeDNA shows that these families are not paternally related; they belong to the entirely different haplogroups of I and R. A descendent of Raleigh Howell, a documented son of Samuel Howell and Mary Hutson, belongs to haplogroup I-P37.
descendant of "Raleigh Howell, b. ca 1775 VA, d. ca 1833 KY?Lived" haplogroup I-P37

descendant of Hiram Howell & Rachael Young (kit 1027648) haplogroup R-FT2697 (Big Y-700)
Others that closely match this descendant of Raleigh Howell also show either haplogroup I-P37, or a more precise haplogroup I-BY60217 with a Big Y-700 test:
Gruffydd Howell b. 1497 d. 1551 haplogroup I-BY60217 (Big Y-700)
descendant of Rufus Hase Howell 1923-2008 haplogroup I-P37

NO MATCH
Other research points towards the possibility of Joseph Howell and Esther Sugg being the grandparents of David, Reece and Hiram Howell. However, Y-DNA testing at FamilyTreeDNA shows that these families are not paternally related; they belong to different sub-branches of haplogroup R:
"Joseph Howell, b. 1733 Edgecombe Co, NC" (kit 144741) haplogroup R-M269
"Joseph Howell, d. 1823 GA" (kit 8264) haplogroup R-M269
"Joseph Howell Sr." (kit 826416) haplogroup R-ZZ12_1

descendant of Hiram Howell & Rachael Young (kit 1027648) haplogroup R-FT2697 (Big Y-700)
Others that closely match those genetically related to Joseph Howell and Esther Sugg, also show haplogroup R-M269. Unfortunately, none have taken the Big Y-700 test:
"John Howell, b. Wales; d. 1688 VA" (kit N8858) haplogroup R-M269
"John Howell b. before 1600 and d. after 1639" (kit 251881) haplogroup R-M269

Previous research hinted towards the possibility of a connection to the Howell and Goins of Granville County, North Carolina. However, Y-DNA testing at FamilyTreeDNA shows that these families are not paternally related; they belong to different sub-branches of haplogroup R:
"Benjamin Howell, b 1753, Granville County, NC" (kit 149345) haplogroup R-M198
"Thomas Howel, b. ca. 1750; d.1790, Granville Co." (kit 21906) haplogroup R-M417

Others that closely match those genetically related to the Howells of Granville County, North Carolina, predominantly show haplogroup R-M512 and a more refined R-FTB27772 (Big Y-700):
"Anderson Howell 1797-1874" (kit 985062) haplogroup R-FTB27772
