Around 1870-1871, during the Franco-Prussian war, Carl Gustav Märten was part of the 4th Company (1st Battalion) of the Lieb-Grenadier Regiment Nr. 8 (1. Brandenburg). This was a famous regiment which distinguished itself in all three of the Wars of Unification (1864, 1866, and 1870-1871). He received the Iron Cross for his service in the Franco-Prussian war (1870-1871). This Regiment was part of the 5th Division of the Prussian/German army. During the Franco-Prussian war the division saw action in the battles of:

On 15 Jun 1876 in Selchow, Kreis Greifenhagen, Pommern, Germany, schäfer and witwer Carl Gustav Merten was married to Louise Friedricke Auguste Lipke. Carl Gustav Merten was Evangelical, born on 23 Aug 1846 in Verwerk Töpferkutin in Kreis Landsburg and residing in Gross Schönfeld; he was son of schäferknecht Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Merten and his wife Amalie born Wehlitz residents of Pätzig bei Schönfleiss. Louise Friedricke Auguste Lipke was Evangelical, born on 30 Nov 1853 in Gross Schönfeld; she was the daughter of the late hausmann Friedrich Wilhelm Julius Lipke and his wife Charlotte Wilhelmine born Block residing in Gross Schönfeld.

The passenger manifest reflects they immigrated with others from the Groß Schönfeld and Selchow communities of Kreis Greifenhagen [two Steffen families, Block, Schumann, Grünberg].

On 1 Nov 1884 in Dodge County, Wisconsin, Gustav Martin declared his oath to the United States to become naturalized. He stated he was born in 1849 in Germany and immigrated through Baltimore, Maryland on or about May 1883. He signed his name as Gustav Märten.
A duplicate was sent to Langlade County in 1908, when Gustav Martin filed his Petition for Naturalization.

This indenture, made this 10th day of June in the year of our Lord 1891 between G. W. Washburn and Sarah P. his wife of Winnebago County, Wis. parties of the first part, and Gustave Martin of Langlade County, Wisconsin party of the second part,
Witnesseth, that the said parties of the first, for and in consideration of the sum of $400, to him in hand paid, by the said party of the second part, the receipt whereof is hereby confessed and acknowledged; have given, granted, bargained, sold, remised, released, aliened, conveyed and confirmed, and by these presents do give, grant, bargain, sell, remise, release, alien, convey and confirm, unto the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns forever, the following described real estate, situated in the County of Langlade, and State of Wisconsin, to-wit:
The East half of the South West quarter of section fourteen, Township 31 North, of Range 12 East.
Together with all the singular the Hereditaments and Appurtenaces thereunto belonging, or in any wise appertaining; and all the estate, right, title, interest, claim or demand whatsoever of the said party of the first part, either in law or equity, either in possession or expectancy of, in and to the above bargained premises and their Hereditaments and Appurtenaces. To have and to hold the said premises as above described, with the Hereditaments and Appurtenances, unto the said party of the second part, and to his heirs and assigns forever.
And the said G. W. Washburg for himself and his heirs, executors and administrators, does covenant, grant, bargain and agree, to and with the said party of the second part, his heirs and assigns, that at the time of ensealing and delivery of these presents he is well seized of the premises above described, as of a good, sure, perfect, absolute and indefeasible estate of inheritance in the law, in fee simple, and that the same are free and clear from all incumbrances whatever and that the above bargained premises, in the quiet and peaceable possession of the said part of the second part his heirs and assigns, against all and every person or persons lawfully claiming the whole or any part thereof he will forever Warrant and Defend. Except taxes of any assessed against said land since July 01, 1887- which the party of the second part is to pay.

This indenture, made this 27th day of June in the year of our Lord 1891 between Gustav Martin and Augusta Martin, his wife, of Langlade County, Wisconsin parties of the first part, and S. E. Leslie of Antigo, Wisconsin parties of the second part,
Witnesseth, that the said part of the first part, for and in consideration of the sum of $250, to them in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowleged, haved granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents do grant, bargain and sell unto the said part of the second, and to heirs and assigns forever, all that certain tract-piece-or parcel-of land situated, lying and being in the county of Langlade, State of Wisconsin and particularly described as follows, to wit: The East half of the South West quarter of Section 14 in Township 31 North, of Range 12 East, containing 80 acres more or less according to Goernment Survey.
To have and to hold, the above bargained premises, with the appurtenances, unto the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns forever. Provided always, and these presents are upon the express condition, that if the said Gustav Martin and Augusta Martin parties of the first part, their heirs, executors, administrators or assigns, shall well and truly pay, or cause to be paid, to the said party of the second part his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns the sum of $250 three years after date, at office of Schintz and Hogan in Antigo, Wisconsin, with interest payable annually at the rate of 10% per annum until paid according to the condition of one certain promissary note bearing even date herewith, executed by Gustav Martin and Augusta Martin, the said parties of the first part, to the said part of the second part, as collateral security, then these presents and the said promissary note shall cease and be null and void.
And the said Gustav Martin and Augusta Martin do further covenant and agree that they will pay taxes and assessments of every nature that may be assessed on said premises, previous to the day appointed in pursuance of any law of the State for the sale of land for taxes. And also will pay the sum of $35 as solicitor's fees, in case of forclosure of this mortgage, by reason of the non-performance of any of the conditions hereof by said parties of the first part. And in the case of the non-payment of said sum, or any part thereof, at the time or times above limited for the payment thereof, or in case of the non-payment of any taxes that may be assessed on said premises in mannor aforesaid, then and in either case, it shall or may be lawful for the said party of the second part his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns, and the said parties of the first part do hereby covenant and agree, and by these presents empower and authorize the said party of the second part his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns, to grant, bargain, sell, release and convey the said premises, with the appurtenances thereunto belonging, at Public Auction or Vendue, and on such sale to make and execute to the purchaser or purchasers, his, her or their heirs and assigns forever, good, ample and sufficient DEEDS OF CONVEYANCE in the law, pursuant to the statue in such case made and provided; and out of the moneys arising from such sale, to retain the principal and interest which shall the be due on the said promissary note together with the costs and charges, and the said sum of $35, solicitor's fees as aforesaid, rendering the surplus moneys, if any there be, to the said parties of the first part, their heirs, executors, adminstrators or assigns, after deducting the cost of such Vendue as aforesaid.

The Martin wood machine has moved to Henry Kiepers having sawed wood for E. Kiepers, C. Higgins and Jule Shurmann during the past week.
Married:-Wednesday afternoon at 2 p. m. A wedding procession was formed at the home of Guss Martin Sr. wending their way to the German Congregational church where a host of riends and relatives awaited the bridal pair. As they entered the church sweet strains of a Wedding March greeted them rendered by Mrs. Aug. Hopp. After a very impressive service Rev. Osten Sacken pronounced the words which made Mr. Otto Martin and Miss Minnie Utnehmer man and wife. Misses Clara Kiefer and Emma Brandt were bridesmaids and Messrs. Aug. Smith and Ed. Utnehmer as groomsman with Guss Martin as the wedding bidder. After the sermons the company repaired to the home of the groom where a sumptuous feast awaited them. Then to Hansselman's hall where Strnad's Orchestra furnished music fo rthose who wished to dance. Mr. and Mrs. Martin have grown up in our midst and are honored and respected by all who know them, over 300 people were in attendance; those from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Schumann, Mr. and Mrs. E. Weigert, Mr. and Mrs. W. Pingle of Appleton, J. W. Parsons and family of Antigo; mr. and Mrs. E. Tacklin of Norwood and Mr. and Mrs. Chris. Brandt of Bryant. Many beautiful presents were received. May their future be strewn with sunshine is the wishes of all their friends."

On 15 Jul 1907, Gustav Wm. H. Martens, son of Carl Gust Martens and Auguste L. Luebke, a farmer in the Town of Polar, born in Germany, was married to Maria Sum, daughter of Johann G. Summ and Maria Blume, born in Antigo. They were white. Marriage license number 895, dated 15 Jul 1907. Married at 2pm on July 15, 1907 at Ev. Luth. St. Petri Church in the Town of Polar. The witnesses were Carl Sum, Hedwig Kieper, Wm. Martens and Clara Brandt. The marriage was performed by C. D. Griese of Langlade County. Certificate dated 24 Jul 1907 and registered 29 Jul 1907.
On 12 Apr 1908 at the courthouse in Antigo, Langlade County, Wisconsin, Gustav Martin filed his Petition for Naturalization. He stated he was a farmer residing in Polar, Langlade County, Wisconsin. He was born on 23 Aug 1846 in "MeiDam, Germany," emigrated through the port of Bremen, Germany on or about 1 Apr 1883 and arrived at the port of Baltimore, Maryland aboard the Hohenzollern. He stated he declared his oath on 1 Nov 1884 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. His wife was Augusta Martin, who was born in "Grossenfeldt, Germany" and residing with her husband in Polar. Their children were listed as the following, all residents of Polar:

"Polar Items
Mrs. Alvina [Martin] Keptkey has been taken to the hospital at Antigo where she was operated on for appendicitis. She is not expected to live but all our hopes are that she may be strong enough to withstand the awful strain."
On 12 Apr 1909, The Daily Journal of Antigo, Wisconsin published an article:
"Mrs. Henry Koebke Died Yesterday Funeral Wednesday
Mrs. Henry Koebke of Polar died at one o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Antigo Hospital after a brief illness, death being due to gangreen of the lungs. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon from the Congregational Lutheran church in Polar, the Rev. Gustav Baumann, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will take place in the Polar cemetery.
Mrs. Alvina Martin Koebke was born in Beaver Dam and was 24 years of age at the time of her death. She came to Langlade county with her parents 16 years ago and has resided in Polar ever since. Besides the husband, she is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Martin, Sr., and the following brothers, all of whom reside in Polar: Otto, Will an Gustav Martin, Jr."

Gust Marten, Jr., and three children, Harold, Sylvia and Leonard, spent Saturday at the John Summ home helping pick potatoes.
Miss Annie Schuman spent Sunday afternoon at the Wm. Martin home.
Gust Marten and Jesse Walker made a trip to Elton Sunday to buy honey from John Wigerham.
Mr. Taylor of Elton had the misfourtune to break his car while on his way to Antigo, Sunday. Gust Marten brought his car to Polar and took Mr. Taylor home.
Gust Marten and son, Harold, went to Antigo Monday with a load of grain."

On 7 Oct 1933 in Polar, Langlade County, Wisconsin, Gustav Martin wrote his last will and testament:
"KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I Gustav Martin of the Town of Polar, Langlade County, Wisconsin, do make this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made.
I give, devise and bequeath to my son William Martin a note and mortgage executed by Walter Stuempges and Sylvia Stuempges his wife in the amount of $700.00 dated January 25, 1932, said note being secured by a real estate mortgage of even date on the following described premises: "Commencing at the Center Stake of Section Fifteen in Township Thirty One North, of Range Twelve East, thence east twenty three feet, thence south nine rods and three feet,- thence east thirty four and one half (34 1/2) rods, thence north nine rods and three feet, thence west thirty four and one half (34 1/2) rods, to place of beginning, being a part of the Northwest Quarter of the Southwest Quarter (NW 1/4 SE 1/4) of Section Fifteen (15) IN Township and Range Aforesaid" which was recorded in the office of the Register of Deeds of Langlade County, Wisconsin, on the 27th day of January, A. D. 1932 at 8:30 o'clock A. M. and recorded in Volume 181 of mortgages on page 129 as document number 121149.
I hereby nominate and appoint my son William Martin the executor of this my last will and request that he be not required to give a surety or sureties upon his official bond or that he be required to give no bond.
I make no provisions in this my last will and testament for my son Otto Martin and Gustav Martin Jr. for the reason that they have been provided for during my life time.
I have also made no provisions in this my last will for my debts and funeral expenses as the same are to be paid by my son Otto Martin under a bond of support heretofore executed by said Otto Martin.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th day of October, A. D. 1933."

"The funeral of Gust Martin, pioneer town of Polar resident and Franco-German war veteran, who died yesterday, will be held Thursday afternoon. Short services will be held at the house at 1:30 and at two o'clock at the Evergreen Lutheran Church. The Rev. Mr. Zuberbler will officiate."

Notice is hereby given that at a term of said court to be held on Tuesday, the 5th day of June, 1934, at 10 o'clock in the forenoon of said day, at the Court House in the City of Antigo, in said County, there will be heard and considered:
The application of Wim. Martin for the probate of the Will of Gustav Martin, Sr., also written Gustav Marten, deceased, and for the appoinment of an executor or administrator with the will ___ ___ of the estate of said Gustav Martin, Sr., also written Gustav Marten, Sr., deceased, late of the Town of Polar in said County;
Notice is further give that all claims against the said Gustav Martin, Sr., also written Gustav Marten, deceased, late of the Town of Polar, in Langlade County, Wisconsin, must be presented to said County Court at the Court House, in said County, on or before the 11th day of September, 1934, or be barred; at that all such claims and demands will be examined and adjusted at a term of said Court to be held at the Court House in the City of Antigo, in said County, on Tuesday, the 18th day of September, 1934, at 10 o'clock in the forenoon of said day.
