The Chicago newspaper, South-Side News, published on 19 Mar 1931 on page 1 an article about Joseph Adas and Josephine Domagalski's son, Joseph Vincent Adas [newspaper incorrectly gives middle initial as L.].
"Carbon Monoxide Gas Causes Death
Joseph L. Adas, aged 24 years, 6019 South Fairfield avenue, was found about 6 o'clock Tuesday morning in the garage at the rear of his home, dead from carbon monoxide poisoning.
It was stated that the young man was seated in his automobile with the car window open and the engine running. Hearing the motor his mother went to the garage where she found her son. Police and a physician were called and the body was taken to a funeral home, where an inquest will be held today."
Joseph Adas' death certificate states he died on 17 Mar 1931 and the official cause of death was "carbon monoxide poisoning, while seated in auto in garage rear 6019 S. Fairfield Ave the door of garage was open about one inch." He was 23 years old and listed as a widower.
This came as a direct result of his wife, Anna Cwiklik, passing away on 13 Jan 1931 at St. Mary's Hospital in Chicago. According to her death certificate, Anna Cwiklik had undergone an operation on 12 Jan 1931 for an appendectomy and double salpingectomy. The physical examination and operation were performed by A. Sampolinski MD. She died a day later from "post operative shock" at only 22 years old.
They left behind a daughter, Irene Shirley Adas (1929-1973), who would be raised by her grandmother, Josephine Domagalski. Irene was married to Walter Bronsberg and they later lived near 60th & Meade, very close to where my father grew up at 70th & Meade - Irene and my grandmother Mary Lou continued to live nearby one another, ~10 streets away and across the railroad yard.
