On 20 Jan 1813 in Warren County, Kentucky, John Cosley was the bondsman for the marriage license of James Thornton and Sally Holder, daughter of William Holder. He signed his name as John Costilow, rather than Cosley.

A roll of Captain Thomas Sterrett's Company of Kentucky Detached Military, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel William Mitchusson, shows John Costilow. He served in the 14th Regiment as a drummer, enlisting on 20 Nov 1814 and was discharged on 20 May 1815.
NOTE: Men from Captain Thomas Sterrett's Company are known to have been neighbors and locals from Warren County, Kentucky. This company was present during the Battle of New Orleans on 8 Jan 1815.
