The SPRENGLING Family
Sprüngli Family from Switzerland:
The Sprüngli are a Patrician family from Zürich, Switzerland. An older, now extinct, family branch acquired Zürich citizenship rights as early as before 1300. The progenitor of the younger branch of the family is Rudi vom Zürichberg, whose son Hans became a Zürich citizen in 1401. The older, so-called Hottingen line, consisted primarily of craftsmen and farmers until the 19th century. The second line, founded by Ulrich (died about 1503), is still flourishing into the 21st century in the Zofingen and Adelfingen branches. The latter branch was founded by Hans (died before 1591), a scribe from Andelfingen. From Andelfingen, David Sprüngli moved to Zürich and became a confectioner, founding a confectionary business producing chocolate together with his son Rudolf. In 1859, Rudolf Sprüngli set up a refreshment shop next to the bakery and store, on what is now Paradeplatz in Zürich. It was only during the 16th century that the Sprüngli family was involved in politics, particulary Bernhard Sprüngli.
There were several branches of the family, all using some variation of the Patrician-line coat of arms:
Patrician; coat of arms A
Andelfingen branch; coat of arms B
Hottingen & Zofingen branches; coat of arms C

Our brick-wall ancestor was Hans Felix Sprüngli [generation 1], a schoolmaster in Wädenswil. He had two children with his first known wife, Anna Lips: Johannes in 1636 and Salomon in 1639. There is a court document stating the schoolmaster of Wädenswil, Felix Sprüngli, had committed adultery with his maid Margret Hiestand in 1646; this resulted in an illegitimate daughter "Cathrin" born the same year in Wädenswil. A year later, in 1647, "Hans Felix Sprüngli" as the schoolmaster of Witikon and a citizen of Zürich, was married to Maria Gräff from St. Gallen. The schoolmaster "Felix Sprüngli" and wife Maria Gräff later had a child, Hans Jacob, in 1649 back in Wädenswil. It appears his full name was Hans Felix Sprüngli, but he went by Felix Sprüngli. Hans Felix Sprüngli later appears as the German schoolmaster [teütsche schulmeister] in Neustadt an der Haardt, Kreis Neustadt, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, where he passed away in 1665.
Johannes Sprüngli and his wife Verena Rebmann [generation 2], along with his younger brother Salomon Sprüngli, left Wädenswil, Switzerland and migrated to Münster bei Bingerbrück, Kreis Kreuznach, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. These localities are about 4 1/2 hours apart by modern transportation, with Münster bei Bingerbrück lying directly north of Wädenswil following the Rhine River.

Sprengling Family from Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany:
The Sprengling surname changes the earlier you go within church records. The earliest spelling was Springli, Springlin and Sprünglin, which turned into Sprengling. Our lineage presented below seems to have always resided in Weinolsheim, near Mainz, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. Johann Peter Springli [generation 3] was a schoolmaster in Weinolsheim at the time of his death in 1729, aged about 71 years old. The only mention of his wife is when she appears as a sponsor during a baptism on 21 Dec 1701 in Weinolsheim, as "Schulmeisters Springlins frau, Margretha [Schoolmaster Springlins' wife, Margretha]."
Johannes Springli-Springlin (generation 4) was remarried after Maria Charlotte Gröhl-Krehl died, to Johann Peter Ebeling's widow Anna Maria NN. This Johann Peter Ebeling, through his first wife Maria Elisabeth NN, was the paternal great-grandfather of Katharina Lohr (generation 4). The Lohr and Ebeling families were also from Weinolsheim.
