Chronological Timeline:
On the 15th and 16th of Jan 1849 in Gladbach, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, an announcement was made regarding property owned by Johann Stümpges and his wife Gertrud Vitz.
"Household Goods and Real Estate Sale
The married couple Johann Stümpges and Gertrud Vitz of Rheydt will hold a sale on Friday, February 16th of this year:
I. At 9:00 a.m. at their residence in Rheydt: Household goods of all kinds, including: tables, chairs, beds, stoves, mirrors, chests, cupboards, copper and tinware, a clock, benches, two looms, etc.
II. At approximately 4:00 p.m. at the inn of Hermann Junkers in Rheydt:
1) A piece of arable land, approximately 1 morgen in size, located on the road from Rheydt to Geneicken, on the so-called "Commertz-Weg" (trade route), bordering the properties of Joh. Vitz and Joh. Jendges;
2) Approximately 1 morgen of arable land, on the Gladbacher-Wege (Gladbach road), bordering the properties of Dilthey and Joh. Peter Stümpges;
3) Approximately 1 morgen of arable land in the area known as "Leermentscheshütte," bordering the properties of Heinrich Frentzen and Hermann Göters; all three parcels located in the municipality of Rheydt to be sold by public auction, for cash, to the highest bidder, by the undersigned notary.

On 2 May 1849, through the Port of New York, the Stümpges family arrived aboard the SS Meta. The manifest only states they were traveling from Germany to the USA. They were listed as the following:

On 5 Jul 1849 in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, Johann Stümpges made oath and declared his intention to become a naturalized citizen. He stated he was born in the Kingdom of Prussia in or about 1798 and he emigrated to the United States on or about May 1849.

An article was published in the Manitowoc Tribune on 11 Dec 1856:
"Chancery Sale
State of Wisconsin, Manitowoc county circuit court.
Foreclosure. John F. Zinns, complainant, vs. Gertrude Stumpges, widow of John Stumpges, deceased; Henry Stumpges, Julius Stumpges, John Stumpges, and Hummel [William] Stumpges, heirs of the said John Stumpges, deceased- defendants.
In pursuance and by virtue of a decretal order made in the above entitled cause on the 22nd day of September, A.D. 1856. I shall sell at public vendue to the highest bidder at the office of L. T. Warren in the village of Manitowoc in the said county of Manitowoc, on the 22nd day of December next ensuing, at one o'clock P.M., the following described real estate, to-wit: All that certain piece of parcel of land lying and being situate in the county of Manitowoc in the state of Wisconsin, and known and described as the north-east quarter of section number nine (9) in township number eighteen (18) north. Of range number twenty-three (23) east containing one hundred and sixty acres, according to public survey.
