Documenting my ancestors and helping others with their research.
The COSTILOW Family
This page provides details about various Costilow families in my attempt to piece them all together. Autosomal and yDNA research has helped significantly with making a lot of these connections within the last decade. The Costilow families and their documented descendants are numerous, to say the least, and it's quite apparent that they're a very prolific family. There's been much confusion about a great deal of research regarding the Costilow family, so this is my hope of setting everything straight with clear, factual evidence.
The records that described our family has our surname written in many different ways; some are blatant clerical errors:
CA: Calesblow, Castalow, Castello, Castelow, Castillo, Castilloe, Castillon, Castillow,
Castilo, Castilow, Castlo, Castlow, Castolow, Castleton, Causterler, Caustelow
CHO: Chostolo
CO: Costaloe, Costalo, Costeloe, Costelow, Costell, Costello, Costellow, Costet, Costillo,
Costiloe, Costiloo, Costilow, Costillow, Costlair, Costloe, Costlow, Costlo, Costoloe,
Costolow, Costolo, Costow, Costulo, Crosdelow, Crosdilow
CU: Cutlol
Costilow yDNA Results
yDNA is passed down from father to son. Two male line Costilow descendants have taken a yDNA test and our paternal line is undeniably Irish.
Costilow mtDNA
I'm looking for a female-line descendant of Margaret Costilow (m. Jonathan Adams in 1791), presumed daughter of Christopher Costilow, willing to take an mtDNA test at FamilyTreeDNA. mtDNA is passed down from mother to daughter and it could help us identify the unknown wife of Christopher Costilow.

*There's a possible connection to this family, only from a date and location standpoint, though significantly more research is needed. Bridget Costelloe (and endless spelling variations) may have been the first Costello in Virginia and there never seems to be any mention of her presumed late husband's name. She was very active in Fairfax County, Virginia and involved in many lawsuits. If the Ireland court records are indeed for the same Bridget, then her son William was presumably an illegitimate child born after her arrival in North America. If William was born abt 1738-1740, then he absolutely could've fathered Christopher Costilow by the mid-late 1750s.
*The future-first president George Washington was a member of the Fairfax County, Virginia court on 20 Feb 1769, overseeing some of Bridget's probate matters.
